Bryony comes from the greek word for ’spring fourth’, and is said to have wanted to escape from the earth and wander freely, needing great care to keep it contained and unable to spread its mischief. Also known as English Mandrake, it has been said Bryony would cry when plucked, have roots that grow to resemble a small child, and was used in witches brews when the much more costly Mandragora was hard to come by.
